Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Among Rock Generations

It has been two decades since Guitar Hero first launched in North America, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like rock legends. Not literally, but try convincing anyone who's mastered Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display synchronized to a song. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, creating the feel of a genuine performance.

Harmonix had already tried its hand in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a remarkable influence on numerous of the artists featured, showcasing decades-old bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges of licensing the songs – even though the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the music they adored. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act included their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a larger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered outdated material, however once it got included in the title and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised it, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the band's first record remained unreleased in the US, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform for exposure for the band during their US tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and several knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Music's biggest acts quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It moved more than half a million units in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music rose significantly during an era as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by the game – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics and extensive personalization features. The song is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated it took months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded when we next toured, and we were playing just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has risked overshadow everything else the band has done. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, be it for automobiles, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon on the stage. From day one, the creators believed humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

The majority installments were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring spin-offs like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments died down, except for a brief comeback in 2015.

Games such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community active, with set to be something from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun work on their first rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“We thought such titles might become like Madden where you can update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason why it can’t continue with new generations.”
