British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.
The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
