The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
